Big Night & Salamander Crossing Brigade
Harris Center Salamander Crossing Brigade Workshop Thursday, March 13
7:00 to 8:30 p.m.
Big Night comes once, sometimes twice, each spring, or can occur as several medium or smaller nights. It’s the magical moment when the temperature and humidity are just right, and spotted salamanders, wood frogs, and other amphibians migrate from wherever they wintered to nearby vernal pools and wetlands where they will breed. This often happens in April, but could occur in March or early May. When their migration involves crossing a road, we can help them cross safely!
Chocorua Lake Conservancy and Green Mountain Conservation Group are assembling a team for a Big Night Salamander Crossing Brigade and data collection in the Chocorua Lake Basin.
In the spring, as we did last year, CLC and GMCG will invite folks who live close to the Chocorua Lake Basin to participate in a Big Night Salamander Crossing Brigade, helping amphibians to cross the road safely and collecting data on what species are on the move.
We encourage anyone living farther away to monitor crossings near their home so that they aren’t driving long distances on a night when amphibians are on the move. The exact date of Big Night is weather-dependent and could be any time March through May. Stay tuned for registration details to come!
PLEASE NOTE: To participate in the program it is important to attend one of the training sessions below as we will be collecting amphibian migration data and identifying amphibians. You will be participating in a very important citizen science program!
