GMCG is hosting a guided snowshoe nature walk on Tuesday, March 25th at 10 a.m. The program is led by GMCG’s Education and Outreach Assistant AmeriCorps member Mackenzie Sirrine. Participants of all ages and families are invited to enjoy the scenic 0.2-mile Blue Heron Trail to enjoy views of the Ossipee River and learn about different tree species in the area and learn skills to identify them in the winter. Participants will gather at 9:45 a.m. at the trailhead kiosk at GMCG’s conservation center, the Blue Heron House, located at 236 Huntress Bridge Rd, Effingham NH 03882. Snowshoes are recommended and participants are encouraged to bring their own. GMCG has both adult and kid sizes available to rent for $5 a pair. Please come prepared to spend a half hour to forty-five minutes outdoors in the snow for this easy walk that is perfect for beginners and families.

This nature snowshoe walk will follow the Blue Heron Trail, a 0.2-mile section of the larger 1-mile interpretive trail established at GMCG in 2021. The full trail includes interpretive guides and ten numbered sign posts where visitors can stop and read more about the surrounding environment. In addition, children can complete a Trail Activity Booklet to earn their GMCG Junior Conservationist patch, and all children who participate in the snowshoe will receive a patch. Visitors are always welcome to enjoy the self-guided trail and can refer to the map on the welcome kiosk to see the trail locations. Highlights include the Ossipee River outlook, vernal pool, tree and plant identification, as well as several other informational features along the forested route.

No registration or RSVP is required and donations are graciously accepted. Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the start of the program if you need to borrow snowshoes. Please email education2@gmcg.org or call 603-539-1859 with any questions.
